Where we have been and where we are going?

The Journal of Insect Science was started in 2001 at the University of Arizona by a talented team called DLIG – the Digital Library Initiatives Group that included Adam Engelsgjerd, Jeremy Frumkin, Bob Grunloh, Jeanne Pfander, and Eualia Roel. Karen Williams provided wise leadership as team leader. The Dean of the Library, Carla Stoffle suggested that libraries should publish such journals, and paved the way for it to happen.

In June of 2005 the Editor of JIS retired from the University of Arizona and moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There JIS found a new home with another talented team called the Office of Scholarly Communication and Publishing that includes Wayne Hayes, Eric Larson and Tom Murray. The Director of the Libraries of the University of Wisconsin, Ken Frazier is providing enthusiastic support. The goal of the Office of Scholarly Communication is to develop mechanisms that will allow universities to publish open access journals in all areas of academic research.
